Scholarship & Grant Scam Warning Guide

Learn scam warning signs and verify funding claims through official government and sponsor sources.

Pause and verify. Claims of guaranteed approvals, “everyone qualifies,” urgent fees, or personal bill grants through Grants.gov are warning signs. The phrase in this warning describes scam claims, not a real government offer.

Warning signs

  • A caller or message says the government selected you without an application.
  • You must pay a processing fee, especially by gift card, wire, or cryptocurrency.
  • You are asked for bank login details, passwords, or one-time security codes.
  • The message pressures you to act immediately or use a lookalike government domain.
  • Someone promises guaranteed approval or says everyone qualifies.
  • A business message says SBA provides ordinary startup grants to everyone.
  • A listing claims Grants.gov pays household bills.

Verify and report

Navigate directly to the agency or provider site. USAGov explains that personal benefit programs are different from federal grants. Grants.gov lists public-purpose opportunities and says it does not provide personal financial assistance.
